Resident Work Hours Checker

Check the schedule before it goes out.

No patient information. This tool only needs dates, times and shift types. Never enter patient names, record numbers or any detail about patients. Name a schedule by role or initials, such as "PGY-2 A, block 5". Your data stays in this browser and is never sent to MedRise.

1. Schedule

Paste rows from your schedule grid (several residents at once)

Copy rows from your spreadsheet: the first cell is a label for the resident (initials or a role, never patient details), then one cell per day starting on the block start date. Each row becomes its own schedule in this block; pasting a row again with the same label updates it. Empty cells are days off. Put two codes in one cell with a plus sign, such as C+ED.

2. Add shifts

Enter every scheduled period of clinical work and required education, including moonlighting. A shift whose end time is earlier than its start time ends the next day.

Overnight shifts end the next day. A shift may start the day before the block if it runs into day 1. For vacation or leave, pick that type; no times are needed.

One shift per line: date, start, end, type, and optionally "next" for next-day ends and at-home call hours. Commas or tabs both work. Dates as 2026-11-02 or month/day/year (11/2/2026). Types: shift, call, night, moonlighting, education, home, leave.

    Findings

Checked against the ACGME Common Program Requirements (Residency), effective July 1, 2026, requirements 6.20 to 6.28. Vacation and leave days are left out of the averages, a common GME practice; follow your institution's policy. Your Review Committee, institution or program may set stricter or different rules, and the requirements are under major revision; confirm the current version that applies to you.

      5. PDF report and data

The PDF report holds the results, the hours by day and week, every finding and the full shift list. It is made in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

      Your data

Everything is stored only in this browser. A backup holds all your schedules and can be restored on another device.

Education and workflow support only. Resident Work Hours Checker helps you plan and review schedules. It applies the rules as written to the times you enter; it does not decide whether a program is compliant, does not replace your program's official work hour logging or your GME office's review, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the ACGME. Clock times are used as entered and daylight-saving changes are not adjusted. Not for patient information. See the terms and disclaimer and privacy notice.
